Ebola – deadly but containable

The human cost of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been shocking but the risk this develops into a global pandemic is low. Ebola is highly infectious but lessons have been learned from SARS, making it more difficult for the virus to spread outside the most infected areas. Even in areas where infection rates have soared the virus’ spread can still be contained with an effective isolation and tracing programme, which international aid is now helping to put in place. Even if the virus becomes endemic in certain parts of West Africa, steps put in place internationally should prevent any economic disruption.
