Macron dealt a weaker hand

In the first round of the French parliamentary election President Macron’s coalition and the left’s grouping ended up neck and neck. Macron may still get his majority in the second round, but it will be a much reduced one. The risks of a weaker French presidency would then spill over beyond the domestic agenda and affect EU reform and the new-found European unity in facing up to Russia’s aggression and the war in Ukraine.
